When I came to Manipal back in February, I didn’t think we’d ever be sent back. In my eyes, this was it. I was going to college, and I was going to have a ball. We all know how that ended. Disappointment aside, there’s one thing I can attribute to my adventures in Manipal – […]
Author: Chords & Co.
From belonging to diverse cultures and having different tastes in music, we come together to form a community where we express ourselves and learn about each other through music.
Chords & Co., though an MIT Club, caters to students' musical interests from various colleges in Manipal.
Our club consists of one working committee and two communities.
The working committee functions with five departments: TPD, CW, GD, PR, and HR.
Whenever there's a need to clean up a soundtrack or create a beat for a video, the Technical & Performance Department (TPD) comes into action. This team ensures and works hard to present music at its best. It is the place to be if you have a knack for performing or love tweaking around with the intricacies of music.
The Content & Writing Department (CW) is the brain behind all our club's content. We create posts and blog articles on a diverse range of topics which range from trivia to actual technical concepts about music. We have something for everyone. The department brings together creative individuals who love expressing their love for music through writing.
Next comes the department, which complements the CW Department- the Graphics & Design Department (GD). This team produces the best possible posters, designs, and visuals to go with CW's content. This team designs all the event graphics.
Then comes the Public Relations & Marketing Department (PR). The club has an image, and they work to maintain that. From sponsorships to collaborations and fundings, this department manages it all. They play a significant role in supporting the people of our club.
Lastly, but in no way the least, we have the Human Resources Department (HR). From planning club events to maintaining interpersonal relationships in the club, the team manages it all. They supervise the club in every conceivable way. They are the true backbone of our club.
Apart from the working committee, the club has one music community and one performance community.
The music community is perfect for all music enthusiasts, irrespective of their musical knowledge and experiences. Even if a person has no idea about music, it is a place to learn, grow and find fellow musicians who encourage others to get into or continue their musical journeys.
Along with the music community, there is a performance community. It recognizes performers and allows them to hone their musical talent. It is a place to meet fellow experienced musicians, where everyone is encouraged to participate in several events. Also, this is a platform that gives artists opportunities to perform in college fests and several musical events.
We do it all, from reviewing, discovering, and creating diverse types of music to conducting contests and live shows. We share our take on various musical topics through our blog, ranging from album reviews to personal musical experiences and more.
Music has no limits, and we try to prove that here!
Cherry Blossom Love – A Short Story
He was reading the newspaper at the local coffeehouse. It wasn’t ever particularly busy, and that’s why he liked going there. Slurping his coffee while slowly sinking into his chair, he read the same repetitive headlines about politics and business. His eyes glossed over an ad for a concert. A random street musician he had […]
Why Do People Like Pop Music?
Have you ever been in a situation where you’re driving a car and a catchy song starts to play on the radio? You hum along subconsciously without being able to figure out why that song got your attention. Wondered why? One possible answer to this question is that you happened to be listening to a […]

How Piracy Changed Music.
Back in 1998, Jay-Z released his most commercially successful album yet – Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. It sold 5.4 million copies, each retailing at roughly 17 dollars each. In 2018, Jay-Z and Beyonce released ‘EVERYTHING IS LOVE’ under the moniker, The Carters. Physically only 70,000 copies were sold, with the rest of their revenue […]
Evolution Of Rap
Rap and hip hop aren’t quite what they used to be when they first gained popularity. The music is very distinct from now, despite sticking to the same genre. Hip hop gained traction in the 1970s; from the poorest section of New York City (the South Bronx), where most singers were unemployed. They started as […]
In today’s day and age, a new genre of music has taken the spotlight among music enthusiasts and musical artists. A unique amalgamation of music, mashups have stolen the show with their unconventional tunes. Even though mashups are produced using other artists’ samples, they have a distinctively creative and clever melody. In my opinion, however […]
Loudness Wars
Ever wondered why the music released in the 60s and 70s sounded different? The recording equipment used wasn’t high quality, but that doesn’t explain why the music was quieter. This practice originated in the 50s, where producers requested louder 7-inch singles (relative to other songs on the radio) so that these songs would stand out […]
Perfect Imperfections: Lo-fi Music
Sometimes imperfections feel perfect. Lo-fi (also spelled lofi or low-fi; short for low fidelity) music is a type of music in which elements that are usually considered flaws in a recording or performance are audible, sometimes as a deliberate aesthetic choice, but on YouTube channels like ChillHop music or DreamyCow, those “mistakes” become an intentional […]
