I am Woman

I am woman.

No, I can’t lift weights.
But I do carry my child
For eight months and one.
I am woman.
I am weak.
I can’t labour,
Until it’s eight months and one.

I am woman.
I will break down,
So they say;
I pick them up
When they fall,
Wipe their tears
When they cry;
Carry their tears on my shoulders.
Take every blow,
Through pain and sorrow.
Yet, I will break down –
So they say.

I am woman.
Hear me roar.
Not as stifled as I was before.
I am woman.
Filled with pride.
Taking it all in my stride.
I am woman.
Blessed with grace.
(I’ll still punch you in the face).
I am woman.
The knight of day.
The force of nature no wind can sway.
I am woman.
You’ll know when I strike,
I am strength and suffering alike.

Girl (n) : A youthful female individual, subjected to infanticide, illiteracy, the dowry system, and unfair treatment amongst the many illicit practices in our country.

The girl child, a burden on the family, was hardly ever given a chance. Unfortunate as it is, a lot of places are home to injustice towards the girl child till date; because she is but a weak and dependent being meant only for the four walls of the house, isn’t she?

But, on a brighter note, we have certainly come a long way. In fact, the 11th of October is celebrated as The Girl Child Day. To celebrate the girl child is to celebrate the woman in her; it is to celebrate a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother.

For a long time now, the power of music has been used to empower femininity. The power of music sees no barrier and effortlessly paves its way into the cruelest of hearts. From ballads to poems to the songs today, music has played an important role in establishing the essence of womanhood for what it is, and should be.

This Girl Child’s Day, let’s celebrate the strong, versatile woman in you, through the lens of music.

Spend a little more time with your sister. Call your mother a little more often. Tell the lady love of your life how beautiful she is. Thank them for making this world a better place by existing. Give them the appreciation they truly deserve while you still can.

Make them feel loved, for these little things mean the world to a woman.
