If there is one thing Manipal really lacks, it is a musical environment that would last throughout the year. But with the concentration of insane talent this place harbours, musicheads of Manipal have made sure that this is taken care of.
Chords and Co. is a new group comprising of such individuals, which focusses on doing just that!
A very subtly intended pun, the name ‘Chords & Co.’ is indicative of a group of musicians coming together to create good music, just like chords actually do!
Most of us associate Chords & Co. with just the acoustic afternoons that used to be held at Hakuna Matata every Sunday, but that is not even the tip of the iceberg. We’re pretty sure you have heard about Eye of the Tiger’s Prom Night in November, which was called by most as the night of the semester! No prizes for guessing which team was behind that!
Objectives of the Association
Chords & Co., as a music community, aims at giving musicians in Manipal a platform to showcase their talent. Bringing musicians together, it not only aims at giving them exposure to the public, but also to each other’s talent. They can not only grow as they execute a plethora of ideas collectively, being one in purpose, but eventually, they can also venture into unconventional forms of music and diversify their talent in the process. And of course, what better way to relax ourselves than some good music? (Fun fact: It is a harmless form of relaxation, get the reference!)

Chords & Co. provides a platform and a one-point contact for anyone who needs musicians, be it a student club, an organisation that needs musicians or just you! A ping on the group or to anyone who is a part of the group, and you are good to go!
WORKSHOPS, GROUPS AND TIE-UPS
One way of inculcating versatility is conducting workshops. You never know when you may turn from a Classical vocalist to a finer Western vocalist, and likewise. It is a common ground for the experienced and the inexperienced. It’s time you picked up that unused guitar leaning against your wall and put it to some use and create mus(mag)ic!
Through this platform, you can make your own groups, such as A Capella, discover and create!
In addition to that, tie-ups with clubs promotes growth of the association and enables it to conduct large-scale events, such as Musicals, Choir, Orchestra, etc.
A MUSICAL ENVIRONMENT
You dig into your Chicken Malai Tikka and sip your favourite drink, with soulful music playing in the background, absorbing you into it – sounds perfect, doesn’t it? If such an environment appeases you, a live band is just what you are craving.
Regular events around Manipal with considerable participation, live entertainment during fests, and so much more – if you are craving all of that, Chords & Co. is your solution!
HAVE THE PASSION BUT NOT THE RESOURCES?

While starting out as a ‘mediator’ for the exchange of instruments among enthusiasts, the club plans to start its own rental in the near future.
That’s not all, folks.
In the long run, they plan on starting their very own recording studio in an attempt to redefine professionalism in the music scenario of Manipal. How cool is that!
Too big a claim? Trust me, these guys know what they are doing!
OTHER INITIATIVES
One of the main things Chords & Co. focusses on is MUSIC THERAPY – a concept which is neither encouraged nor acknowledged. It is scientifically proven fact that music can heal and help you work better by releasing the ‘pleasure chemical’ dopamine. We have physiologic responses to music. It improves attention, enhances learning and it is motivating.
– The club plans to visit orphanages and government schools and create a musical environment for them, which will not only tap into their soul but also help them, in whatever little way it can, to realise their potential and bring out the best in them.
– There are many who may have a talent in the field of music, raw talent – latent and untouched. Chords & Co. plans to conduct workshops for them, to teach them and open new vistas for them.
– They plan to include quite a few of these kids into their group, and give them a platform to perform, so as to assure them of all the exposure they need to come out of their shells and transform their dreams into reality.
– There are times when we feel emotionally zoned out, times when you lack motivation and apathy creeps into you. Music helps in instantly lifting your mood, and get you going for the next few hours or so. There are sessionals and the end-semester examinations when you are stressed out of your wits, as are other phases during the course of the semester. Tailor-made playlists, suited to your current mood, will definitely help you sync with the environment and avoid the ‘zone-out’ phase.
– The club will soon create its own YouTube channel and all of your work will be uploaded through it – be it a cover, an instrumental, a fusion or even a rap that you composed!

Sound Expert
You must have a deep understanding of the technicalities of sound systems. Your technical know-how is very crucial for the organisation. Making sure the artist’s craft is assisted by your magic is what you do!
Content and Design
The audience sees the organisation through your eyes. You do not need to be a musician yourself; if you have an ear for music and can critique reasonably, you know what to do!
Public Relations
You are the face of Chords & Co. – the point of contact between the public and the members of the association. You represent Chords & Co. on a professional level, and network with organisations around. So if you are a people’s person, this one’s for you!
Marketing and Publicity
Putting it as straight as possible, you sell Chords & Co.
This is where all the Don Drapers of Manipal flick their wands. You need to develop marketing campaigns as and when the club starts out with a new initiative – make sure Chords & Co. is the undivided talk of the town!
Event Management
Dates, venues, event flow and every little aspect of each event is your responsibility. If ‘jugaad’ and micromanagement are your ball game, this is where you belong.
